I love this book, I love this series! I reread this series every three to four months and I love it as much on the last reading as I did on the first! I know the author is better known for her other series but in opinion this is one of the best science fiction series ever written. My only complaint is that the author is not adding to the series. If only C. J. Cherryh would add to this series as it is one that cries out for more books to be written to feed the addiction to the Chanur universe that this series has brought forth in those of us who have fallen in love with the series. Please, do yourself a favor and buy this book, and the other two books in the series. You will not be disappointed except that there are no more books in the Chanur series. Believe me, I pray quite regularly that the author will come to her senses and write more Chanur books. I would instantly buy them if she did, and so would anyone else that is a science fiction fan. This series is representative of everything a science fiction fan loves about the genre.

We are dropped into a wholly formed and fully functioning universe where all we can do is hang on and enjoy the ride. And enjoy it I did. Some parts are described and some are left to the reader's imagination. The technology, the day to day life on the Pride, the glimpse of life on the Home World. So much to amaze and astound. Totally alien and yet accessible by us soft and vulnerable humans thanks to Cherryh's deft and incredible creation of dialogue and inter-species relationships. Deals and double-crosses abound to the point we forget we're dealing with aliens. At least till we (and they) need the translator to understand what's going on. And let's not forget the Methane Breathers. Who knows what's going on with them? Just don't get in their way when they leave the station!
Bottom line Great characters, great story. It would be fantastic as an animated movie but, maybe it's better to only imagine...
Note that despite the mediocre votes, the reviews below rave about the books themselves it's the omnibus packaging of only half the series that is drawing complaints. Ms. Cherryh herself explains on her web site that these bulk releases are the best way to get old material back on the shelf so booksellers will accept new books in the series. And a new Chanur book would be a very good thing! These books are a perfect intersection between Ms. Cherryh's insightful extra-anthropological works and straightout adventure, with the most convincing space battles I've encountered, station docksides that make the cantina from Star Wars look like a walk in the park, and aliens characters so engaging that the humans seem, well, alien. Buy it, vote it up, and hope the message gets to the publishers!
I enjoy fantasy scifi,but although I enjoyed book left me hanging.is there a follow up.?????
Ms Cherryh has won multiple Hugo awards, and I consider this the best SF ever written, bar none. I re-read it regularly. This is both a rollicking, roller-coaster ride through a future reality and a thoughtful exploration of humanity and alternative "humanity"--how other technological species might live and prosper with vastly alien assumptions and rules from ours. It is not some dry dissertation but novels that SHOW how the other species could survive with patterns of life very different from humans. It is space opera, but without "technobabble" and gratuitous jargon. I cannot praise this series highly enough without spoiling it!

WARNING This is the relatively light introductory novel, The Pride of Chanur, and TWO of three novels in the Chanur trilogy. The last novel is not here! This is entirely on the publisher, not on Ms. Cherryh. You should get Chanur's Endgame with this, the last volume of the trilogy and a sequel that explores the pattern of life of yet another alien species.
One of the best series that I have ever read. The characters are amazing. The six different races of an Alien society are so real that you are fully immersed in the politics of their lives. It is full of surprises, and keeps you wanting more. This is one of my favorite authors, and I would recommend all of her books. Also the novel Downbelow Station, if you really love sify. You will fall in love with her characters.
C.J. Cherryh is an outstanding science fiction writer. This 3 volume collection demonstrates her expertise in creating an alien culture that is truly fascinating. Her description of human/alien interaction is believable. Her storytelling is very good. In my opinion, THE CHANUR SAGA is a must read, classic title that any fan of science fiction focusing on human-alien interaction will enjoy.
A well-written story about a lone human in a complex alien civilization. It is an inescapable fact that the aliens in sci-fi are human in character because we cannot conceive of a truly alien persona. Within that limit, Cherryh is very adept in creating an entertaining and credible story of conflict and resolution. A very good read!
