Parisian by Heart Mari Mann 9781453679555 Books Reviews

Mari Mann's debut novel Parisian by Heart is a pure delight - the literary equivalent of a freshly baked madeleine cookie dipped in tea on a summer afternoon. The story connects, in a masterful way, the lives of Marcel Proust, with his mysterious moments in and through time, Charles Dickens, Marie Antoinette, Vincent van Gogh, and other fascinating characters in a magical homage to the City of Light. Mann blends centuries and continents with a certain humor and irreverent savoir-faire, just as Julia Child - who, by the way, makes an appearance - might blend the ingredients of madeleine batter. Along the way, we are invited to participate intimately in the lives of the characters, revealing the surprising and acutely subtle interconnections that give depth and meaning to each and every life, whether in the Gilded Age, the French Revolution, or contemporary times. Parisian by Heart is both a journey to the Paris of dreams and a voyage into our own heart, nearly impossible to put down and a joy to read again and again. Bravo!
I thought that Ms. Mann wove a quite creative tale in her book Parisian By Heart. There was interesting interaction between the protagonist and the historical characters she meets along her way. She uses quite a few interesting devices to move her plot along (not to giving anything away), including a story within a story. The reader can tell that she is a full blown francophile, but it isn't overwhelming to the reader. The only reason I didn't give this novel 5 stars is because I'm not sure a reader without any experience with Proust or In Search of Lost Time would have had the same experience with the book. Overall, a pleasant, quick read.
This is a fetching tale of a woman's mission to reach Paris and things Parisian. It's a tale of self-discovery that touches on misgivings as well as heart-felt inspirations. At it's peak, it's a surrealistic whirlwind of phobias juxtaposed brashly against fantasies and moonbeams. In it, the author explores the finer things in life----fine foods, splendid sights, opulent establishments, and yes, famous personalities, too----yet she roots herself in the simplicity of life as well home cooking, visits to her grandfather, packing for a trip.

The story is segmented into an array of facets that deeply echo the spread of Tarot cards of the Major Arcana; that is, the meaning behind those cards the Sun, the Moon, the World, the Lovers and so forth. The chapter titles themselves closely follow the themes of the Major Arcana, which for thousands of years has represented a repository of symbols common to people throughout the ages, drawn from what has been called the "collective unconscious", or in simple terms the human experience and the human condition. The author relates the constants of the human journey to her own experience.

Other elements of the psychic realm are also prevalent in this book Past Life Regression, Spirit Contact, and reincarnation. These tools are employed in an effort to discover the source, itself, that lay behind the author's ardent desire to reach Paris, that lay behind a mission and drive for which there seems to be no tangible causes. Will she get make it?

This book is for anyone who cares to investigate alternative methods and insights to what may motivate us. And, yes, there are even magic mushrooms.
I finished Mari Mann's Parisian by Heart and I highly recommend that you place her book on your to-be-read list. Albeit far from my genre, I welcomed the thrill of the new adventure. I feel as if I am the American eagle that makes its nest at Lynx Lake, which is close to our home in Arizona. While the normal flight path of the western eagle is to fly from here to Oregon or the State of Washington, one year this particular eagle spent his time in Colorado; an adventurous side trip to be sure.

As if to keep with the current trend, Mari's book takes you on a dream scape through Paris. I loved the way she allowed me to brush up on my French while she introduced me to, and then broadened my horizons to a few of histories finest. Without disclosing too much, I was intrigued with how much I associated with and connected to the written events. Without prior knowledge of this story, I think it is strange that the one gift we like to give is available prints by Vincent van Gogh.

I will be looking for further discussion from those interested in reading Mari's book. Until then, aller avec Dieu mes amis jusqu'à ce que nous rencontrons encore. (Go with God my friends, until we meet again.)
With old world charm and a quirky set of events, this book is sure to capture the heart of many lovers of the French culture.
What I enjoyed most was the mood, the whimsical atmosphere that pervades the pages. Yes, of course, the plot is a bit defiant of logic, but it is amusing, and fun in such a way that the reader can easily put the rules of the universe aside and enjoy the ride. There are some wonderfully lush descriptions of Paris, and of some of the most famous people to have lived there, making the reader feel as if they had come to life around him or her. Since this is what the main character experiences, it shows you how nicely the whole plot is handled.
I do wish it'd been a little longer. Some of the scenes felt a bit rushed, and I would have liked to have spent more time with some of the characters that appear, like Van Gogh, or Dickens. That is the only real fault I found in the book, its brevity. Other than that, it was highly amusing to read and it allowed us to experience just a little of what it means to be a Parisian by heart.
As a Proust fan, I had to read this one. A tad too fanciful for my taste. But worth it for the surprise ending
