I snapped this book up as soon as I read the premise. I love paranormal romance and I haven't seen a lot of romances set in an Asian country, so I was excited to give this one a try. I enjoyed the chemistry between the hero and heroine. I love it when a hero simply can't resist and unabashedly falls head over heels in love, unwavering in his pursuit of his heroine. What I could have done without is both the heroine's and hero's obsession with Lucy not being like one of "those other girls." Lucy placed a lot of her self-identity, and Sheng a lot of his attraction, on Lucy being super sensual but not too slutty. The slut-shaming aspect was exasperating, especially because I felt the characters' chemistry would have been just as strong even if Lucy had more sexual experience. Possibly stronger. Also, the disappointing level of worldbuilding showed a superficial knowledge of both the mythology the author based her plot on and the setting of Penang, Malaysia. I confess I skimmed through most of the info dump about all the gods and spirit animals, but I didn't see any fresh twists that stretched beyond the bits of Chinese philosophy trivia I've randomly picked up over the years. And I've been to Penang as a tourist a couple of times, and I could not recognize any of the real Penang in the author's alternate future Penang, which should be a part of its history.

Overall Rating 4 Rockin’ ★★★★
Trancing the Tiger is the first book in Rachael Slate's series, Chinese Zodiac Romance. In this book the author delves into a mystical world of zodiac animal spirits that dwell in Chosen humans. The Earth is being plagued by the Red Death which is believed to have been released by the god of plagues. This novel is a fantastical romantic creation that will deliver passion, suspense and erotic romance to its reader. Once again it is good fighting against evil with a romantic kick!
Lucy Yeoh lost her parents to the Red Death. As the people in the world around her are dying from the plague, she is spared. Her only living family is her uncle who lives in Penang, Malaysia. She is whisked away into a new life that she is not prepared for. However, this new life brings to light much about herself that deep down she always knew, always felt. Somehow when Lucy’s life changes drastically, she finds herself prepared beyond what is needed to survive.
Li Sheng is the Chosen of the Tiger spirit. He is a leader among all. He has been looking for the return of the Dragon spirit, the yin to his yang. To balance his kind and bring forth the destruction of the Plague God, Li needs all spirits to submit to his will in order to join him in the fight. Although he finds a chink in his carefully thought out plans, Lucy Yeoh.
The author carefully crafted this novel into an adventurous romantic tale through the entrancing nature of the zodiac. I was spellbound by the depth of the characters, as well as the storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed the amazing world that was forged by the author and am excited about reading the next book in this series.
Can Lucy fully submit to Li as necessary? Will Li accept Lucy for the woman she is? Together, will the spirit warriors defeat the evil that is plaguing the world? Read this book to find out these answers and more. It will not disappoint you!
I thought it was going to be way better than it. I gave up about half way through. I wanted to read it because in Chinese Zodiac I was born the year of the tiger.
I got so tired reading about the fact Lucy was nothing but a rabbit. Before she gets involved with the tiger, she sound like she may of had a backbone. Sheng was a pain with the way treated her. Once she was with Sheng she turns into being nothing a big baby so to speak.
Poor little rabbit, you need to be taken care of under the ruling hand of the big bad tiger. You are mine little rabbit, run off so I can hunt you down. Poor rabbit I know you want me. On and on! About the time they find out she is more than just a little rabbit? Was about the same time I gave up on the story. I gave up. Little white rabbit, grow a backbone..
There are more books in this series but I'm going to pass on them.
Absolutely fabulous! Engaging, riveting, sexy as all get out. .. on the edge of your seat Oy! If life wouldn't have gotten in my way, I would have read it in one sitting, I didn't want to put it down. I loved everything from the main and secondary characters, to the plot, and I will admit a bit of a paranormal snob. One of my favorite parts in a PNR is the scents that are explained, and they had heart at the descriptive scents. I wasn't sure if I could relate or understand it all, as I am not that familiar with Asian cultures etc. but, Ms. Slate hooked me straightaway. Sheng (tiger) is the ultra sexy Alpha male, who has been told Lucy (Rabbit) is totally off limits. Lucy, can feel the chemistry with Sheng, and wants to deny her feelings. This love story is one of teacher, trainer and eventually a fabulous lover. Honestly, I can't wait for the next book in the series, which thankfully comes out this year! Kuddos to her on her novel debut! **was provided an e-ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review..** Reviewed for MyBookAddictionandMore
This is one of those hard-to-put-down books that will keep you up past your bedtime! A shameless romance novel junkie, I absolutely loved Trancing the Tiger. It has all the elements I look for in a good book –- a yummy alpha male, a strong minded woman who challenges him, layers of intrigue that kept me guessing, and a steam level that ranks at…um…wow.
You feel like you’re walking through the lush tropical jungles of Malaysia, and it’s because the author has actually travelled to the exotic setting of her book. I think it adds an extra layer of magic to her writing.
Rachel Slate is a debut author I plan to follow. I love her unique voice and new, fresh twist on the concept behind her Chinese Zodiac Series. I’ve already joined her street team and can’t wait to get my hands on book two in this series.
